Sedro-Woolley, Washington:
The Gateway to the North Cascades

Sedro-Woolley is where the “Woolley Spirit” meets the rugged beauty of the mountains. It’s a town that wears its logging heritage like a badge of honor, offering a grounded, adventurous lifestyle for those who prefer boots over business suits.

Discover the Charm: A Small-Town Gateway with a Big Heart
Sedro-Woolley is the ultimate “Mountain Gateway.” Nestled in the heart of the Skagit Valley and surrounded by forests, rivers, and the Cascade foothills, it’s a city defined by its dual history. Born from the merger of two rival towns—Sedro and Woolley—it now offers a double dose of historic charm. In 2026, it remains the go-to destination for those seeking a quiet, star-filled sky and a community where people still check in on their neighbors. It’s rugged, it’s real, and it’s arguably the best “basecamp” in Washington.

The Sedro-Woolley Insider

Why is everyone carrying a chainsaw?

Don’t worry, it’s just our heritage! We are the “Loggerodeo” capital of the world. Every Fourth of July, we host the oldest 4th of July celebration in Washington, featuring professional logging competitions. It’s loud, it’s historic, and it’s a total blast. It defines our “Woolley” spirit.

It’s in the name! “Sedro” and “Woolley” were rival towns that eventually realized they were better together. Today, that dual history gives us a larger-than-expected downtown footprint with double the historic charm.

We head to the Northern State Recreation Area. It’s a massive park with miles of trails for hiking and horseback riding. If we want something more vertical, we’re just a short drive from the North Cascades Highway (SR 20), which leads to some of the most epic hiking in the United States.

You’re closer than you think! You’re only about 10 minutes from I-5 and the shopping in Burlington. Many locals commute to Bellingham or Mount Vernon, enjoying the fact that they can work in the city but come home to the quiet, star-filled skies of the foothills.

It’s one of the best “hidden gems” left in the region. While prices in Skagit Valley have risen, Sedro-Woolley remains a bastion of affordability. You can still find homes with actual acreage here—something that is becoming a luxury in the rest of the North Sound.
